Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has expressed dissatisfaction with the consistent attacks he has received from veteran journalist Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr.

In a letter to Mr. Kweku Baako Jnr, Professor Frimpong-Boateng described the attacks as longstanding and consistent since August 2010 when he contested for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position. The veteran journalist had recently sent a text message to the professor on the report of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), which he chaired. The committee had accused some elements at the Presidency of hampering the fight against illegal mining in Ghana.

The former minister explained that the report was submitted to the President after being instructed by the Chief of Staff to do so. He further stated that he presented verifiable facts and not innuendos to the Chief of Staff, and he takes full responsibility for the report. Professor Frimpong-Boateng promised to provide articles from Mr. Kweku Baako Jnr’s Crusading Guide newspaper as evidence of his attacks on him.

This is not the first time the two have had disagreements. Mr. Kweku Baako Jnr had earlier criticized the former minister over his handling of the “Galamstop” initiative when he was the head of the IMCIM. The veteran journalist had alleged that some officials in government were frustrating the fight against illegal mining. He urged the former minister to provide evidence to back his claims, adding that unsubstantiated allegations could damage the reputations of individuals and institutions.

In conclusion, Professor Frimpong-Boateng has stood by the IMCIM report, saying that he presented verifiable facts and not innuendos. Meanwhile, Mr. Kweku Baako Jnr has yet to respond to the allegations levelled against him by the former minister.
