Joseph Yammin, a former deputy minister of sports during the administration of John Dramani Mahama, is perplexed as to why the government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has abandoned the nearly finished Nyinahini Sports facility in the Ashanti Region.
Ten stadia in each of the ten regions was a pledge made to Ghanaians by the NPP upon assuming power.
Mr. Yammin is concerned that the project has been allowed to decay after all the money was invested in it.
He said on a radio station in Kumasi that the NPP is just concerned in nice words and is not prepared to build the nation.
“I visited former Sports Minister Asiamah’s constituency which is where the stadium or sports complex is being built. Go out there and look at things for yourself. Everything has been left to rot. If you can’t go there, just go and check on my Facebook wall. I was there and did a live. When you stand on the pitch, the grass is at knee level. When a rat is running in it, you can’t spot it. They (the NPP government) don’t care about anything in this country. “
“How can the money be spent on a project, the buildings, the tracks, the infrastructure and the same government leaves it to rot? This is not an NDC project oh, it’s an NPP project under Nana Addo and they have abandoned it”, he lamented.
Formerly a Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Yammin claimed he was taken aback when some expressed a desire for Kototo FC and the Black Stars to practice at the Nyinahini Sports facility.
“I laughed when some people suggested, the Black Stars and Asante Kotoko can go and train there when the Kumasi Sports Stadium was under renovation or so. It tells you how people are disinterested in monitoring development in the region, but some of us are interested in what happens in the Ashanti region,” he said.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports on behalf of the government unveiled plans in 2017 to build ten youth and sports facilities spread over ten areas.
Former sports minister Isaac Asiamah lives at the main entrance to the town, which is ten minutes’ drive from the Nyinahini Sports facility.
However, most localities have seen a rush of ASTRO turfs since the NPP retained power following the 2020 elections, and this has now become the standard for football playing places.
