The government has been asked to focus on enhancing the nation’s full value chain for cocoa growers by the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
The party claims that in addition to depending on increases in the price of cocoa on the market, Ghana can enhance the livelihoods of cocoa farmers by offering access to resources, training, infrastructure, and financing as well as by empowering farmers through cooperative organizations.
This was said in a statement that Nana Ofori Owusu, the National Chairman, signed.
The PPP also included proposals for infrastructure development, value growth and diversification, access to finance and credit, empowerment through cooperative societies, and sustainable agricultural methods.
The declaration follows President Nana Akufo-Addo’s announcement of an increase of 63.6% in the farm gate price of cocoa beans from GH₵800 to GH₵1,308 per bag for the new cocoa season.
The president stated that the increase is the largest in West Africa in the previous 15 years when addressing cocoa growers in Tepa, in the Ashanti Region, at the start of the 2023–2024 cocoa season.
However, there have been a variety of responses to the news.
Former President John Mahama said the administration has been insensitive and has taken advantage of cocoa producers.
