Illegal herbal and orthodox medical products worth GH₵700,000 have been seized by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) during a market surveillance exercise in Kumasi. The seized products included aphrodisiacs, unregistered herbal products, orthodox pain relievers, and cosmetics.

The items were taken from a single retail shop at the Alabar market, which is known for the sale of unwholesome herbal products and drugs. The FDA discovered that some of the products had unknown languages engraved on them, while others were sourced from the United States.

According to the Ashanti Regional Head of the FDA, John Laryea Oddai Tettey, the products were a mixture of indigenous and exotic consumables. He stressed that the FDA will never approve such products and that the source of these products remains unknown. Tettey said, “We want to assure that when these smugglers beat entry points, we will always fish them out when they come on the market.”

The FDA has expressed concern over the increasing penetration of illicit medicinal products on the market. The Authority is mapping the entire region to locate the sale of these products and bring perpetrators to book. “We do a lot of scouting and surveillance, and we are mapping the entire region so that wherever we have these products sold, we will move to those areas and get rid of them. But we have some spots that perpetually display these products and we are starting with them, and we will get to them,” Tettey said.

The FDA is collaborating with relevant agencies to remove advertisements and sales of unwholesome products from the internet. Tettey cautioned the public against patronage of unregistered products and encouraged individuals to visit the hospital and obtain a prescription. The seized products will be destroyed through incineration. Three persons have already been arrested for similar offenses and arraigned.

The FDA has taken a bold step to rid the market of unwholesome herbal and orthodox medical products. The Authority is collaborating with other relevant agencies to ensure that the appropriate thing is done to rid these marketers. It is the responsibility of the general public to visit licensed chemical shops or pharmacies to obtain their prescribed medication, rather than purchasing unregistered products.
