An accident on the Elubo road in the Western Region of Ghana has claimed the lives of at least two people and caused other life-threatening injuries. The accident occurred on the afternoon of April 29, 2023, at the Anwiafutu junction.
An articulator truck loaded with bales of used clothes was traveling towards Elubo when it collided with an incoming empty cargo truck that had lost one of its tires. The driver of the cargo truck and his mate reportedly lost their lives on the spot after they failed to control their vehicle from crashing into the articulator truck.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred on the main Takoradi to Elubo highway and temporarily affected traffic movement for motorists heading towards Ivory Coast and those also heading to Takoradi and beyond.
The police have cleared the road for free movement of vehicles, but the tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety in Ghana.
The Ghana Police Service has repeatedly urged drivers to observe all traffic rules and regulations to avoid unnecessary accidents. Unfortunately, many drivers continue to flout these laws, endangering their lives and the lives of others on the road.
For the most part, accidents can be avoided if drivers exercise caution, maintain their vehicles properly, and drive defensively. It is also important for the government to invest in road infrastructure and safety measures to reduce the risk of accidents on our roads.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families of the deceased and those injured in the accident. We hope that authorities will take the necessary steps to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
