The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, one of the most anticipated events in the Ghanaian music industry, has once again sparked controversy following the release of the nominations for the 2023 edition. The exclusion of Kweysi Swat’s ‘Oh Obibini’ from the Reggae Song of the Year category has caused quite a stir in the industry, with many artistes and industry observers expressing their disappointment.

During a recent episode of the Takoradi-based Connect FM Entertainment Review Show with Ato Kwamina Otoo D’Gem, an observer questioned why ‘Oh Obibini’ had been left out of the category. Dan Lartey, CEO of Remedi Entertainment, also shared his views on the show, stating that his research had included the song in both the ‘Songwriter of the Year’ and ‘Reggae Song of the Year’ categories.

Lartey further expressed his admiration for Kweysi Swat Nyansa, the artiste behind the song, and stated that he deserved to be nominated for ‘Songwriter of the Year’ every time he released a new song. He described Kweysi Swat as a fantastic artiste, and his assessment of the artiste’s talent is widely shared within the industry.

‘Oh Obibini’ is a thought-provoking masterpiece that addresses the issue of how Black people are not using their capabilities to do better for themselves. The song has been well received by many in the industry, who believe it deserved to be nominated for both the ‘Reggae Song of the Year’ and ‘Songwriter of the Year’ categories.

Controversies surrounding award shows are not new to the Ghanaian music industry, and the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is no exception. While criticisms are to be expected, it is essential to note that the awards have been a significant platform for recognizing and celebrating the immense talent within the Ghanaian music industry for many years.

It is also important to note that being nominated for an award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is a significant achievement for any artiste, and we look forward to celebrating the winners at this year’s event.
