Former Finance Minister and current flagbearer hopeful for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Kwabena Duffuor, has expressed his commitment to prioritizing the development of sports in Ghana if elected as president in the 2024 general election.
According to Dr Duffuor, the sports sector has been neglected for far too long, and it is high time the government invested heavily in it. He promised to build sports stadia in all regions of the country to help improve the sector.
Dr Duffuor believes that investing in sports will not only create opportunities for young people but will also enhance Ghana’s reputation on the global sports stage. The former Finance Minister also expressed his disappointment at the neglect of the Essipong Stadium, which he said was an eyesore and needed proper care.
Dr Duffuor added that his plan to build ultra-modern stadia across all regions of Ghana, including the district level, would help develop local talents and reduce reliance on foreign-based players.
The former Minister’s plan to develop sports in Ghana has received support from various stakeholders in the sector. Many have applauded his vision and believe that it is long overdue.
However, Dr Duffuor faces competition from other contenders, including former President John Dramani Mahama and former Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu, in the internal party elections. Nonetheless, he has assured party members that he has the vision and experience to lead Ghana to greater heights.
For the most part, the development of sports in Ghana has been a neglected area. The country has struggled to maintain and develop sports facilities, leading to a decline in sporting activities. Dr Duffuor’s promise to build modern sports facilities across the country will be a significant boost to the sector and could potentially attract more investments in the sports industry.
In a nutshell, Dr Duffuor’s pledge to prioritize the development of sports in Ghana if elected as president is a step in the right direction. With proper investment in sports facilities, the country can produce more local talents and reduce the reliance on foreign-based players.
