Over ten members of the dominant New Patriotic Party (NPP) have declared their intention to run in the party’s presidential primary, including the former minister of food and agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
As has become customary, many candidates for president have catchphrases that express the philosophies behind their presidential campaigns. The supporters of the presidential candidates also utilise these catchphrases as part of their campaigns.
For instance, Alan Kyerematen, a candidate for the NPP presidential nomination, has GTP as one of his campaign slogans, which refers to his economic strategy for transforming Ghana, the Great Transformational Plan (GTP).
Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), goes under the slogan “Ahoto,” which stands for his initiative to promote his party’s grassroots.
ATOPA, which translates for “Akoto Tops All,” is the catchphrase of Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
On his Kokrokoo show on Peace FM, veteran broadcaster Kwame Sefa Kayi mentioned Dr Akoto’s tagline and couldn’t help but start laughing.
Sefa Kayi said, “Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto’s catchphrase is ATOPA, meaning Akoto Tops All,” before erupting in fits of giggles.
The Kokrokoo programme panellists, including seasoned journalist Kweku Baako Jr and social analyst Bernard Allotey Jacobs, joined Sefa Kayi to giggle uncontrollably after being astounded by the ATOPA motto.
The Akan word “Atopa” describes a guy who vigorously humpses a lady during sexual contact.
