Some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Afram Plains South constituency have requested the party’s Functional Executive Council (FEC) to exclude the constituency from their upcoming parliamentary primaries scheduled for May 13, 2023. The concerned and disgruntled members, in a letter to the FEC, raised concerns about unresolved issues that may lead to a political crisis if not addressed.

The letter, which called on the FEC and the Council of Elders of the party to intervene and withhold the primaries, stated: “We invoke the powers of the Functional Executive Council (FEC) and the Council of Elders of our party to as a matter of urgency, intervene and withhold Afram Plains South parliamentary primaries to avert the political cataclysm that is looming over the constituency.”

The members also urged the FEC to take action to protect the integrity of the party and expunge the Afram Plains South constituency from the impending parliamentary primaries. They referenced earlier letters issued by the FEC in support of their plea.

The call for exemption from parliamentary primaries in Afram Plains South is not the first of its kind in recent times. The NDC has faced similar challenges in other constituencies across the country, with some members calling for the party to resolve internal issues before holding primaries.

All in all, the call for the exclusion of Afram Plains South from the upcoming parliamentary primaries is a reflection of the growing concerns among some members of the NDC. It highlights the need for the party to address internal issues that may affect its electoral fortunes in the upcoming general elections. As the party prepares for the primaries, it must take into account the concerns of its members and work towards ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants.
