Devtraco Fire Station has emerged as the winner of a quiz tournament organized by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Tema Regional Command. The competition was held to assess firefighting abilities in fire safety, fire administration, fire operation, and general knowledge. The Devtraco Devisional Command participants were awarded certificates, and the first-place officer received a plaque, a certificate, and other mementos. Industrial Fire Station also won first-runner-up certificates, while Katamanso Fire Station and Tema Metro Fire Station finished third and fourth, respectively. Dodowa Fire Station and Kasapreko Fire Station also took part in the competition.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer I (ACFOI) Doris Lamptey, Commander of the Tema Regional GNFS, explained that the quiz exercise was designed to broaden personnel’s knowledge and scope and keep thoughts concerning fire control fresh in their minds so that they would not be found wanting in any situation. ACFOI Madam Lamptey also revealed that the quiz competition’s practical part included rescuing victims in vehicular accidents.
Mr. Carlos Ahenkorah, the Member of Parliament for Tema West and the event’s honoree, commended the GNFS for minimizing fire incidences in their territory. He remarked that while the government had done well in providing logistics for the fire department, more support was needed. Mr. Ahenkorah directed the GNFS to become engaged in issuing building licenses to guarantee that residences were designed with sufficient road demarcation for easy access to rescue disasters.
For the most part, the GNFS deserves praise for organizing this competition to test the knowledge and abilities of their personnel. The competition’s practical aspect, which included rescuing victims in vehicular accidents, is a significant part of the fire service duty. The Devtraco Fire Station’s victory indicates that they are well equipped to handle fire emergencies in their area of operation.
Moreover, Mr. Ahenkorah’s call for the GNFS to become more involved in issuing building licenses is commendable. This approach could ensure that residences are constructed with sufficient road demarcation for easy access in case of emergencies. The government must provide more support to the GNFS to enable them to carry out their duties effectively.
In a nutshell, the quiz competition was a useful exercise that allowed the GNFS to assess the knowledge and abilities of their personnel. The Devtraco Fire Station’s victory is a testament to their competence in handling fire emergencies. The government must provide the necessary resources to support the GNFS, and the GNFS must be more involved in building licensing to ensure that residences are designed with sufficient road demarcation for easy access during emergencies.
