The Managing Editor of the Dispatch newspaper, Ben Ephson, has caused a stir with his prediction of an overwhelming victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 general elections. His bold prediction is based on his belief that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has successfully won the support of both the Christian and Muslim communities, which would make it easy for him to break the eight-year cycle if he leads the NPP.

Dr. Bawumia, who is gradually gaining momentum in the NPP flagbearership race, has already received the support of about 80 NPP Members of Parliament (MPs). According to Ben Ephson, Dr. Bawumia stands head and shoulders above his competitors in the NPP, and his candidature would enable the party to secure an immense victory with ease.

The pollster argued that Dr. Bawumia’s ability to mingle with Christians, despite being a Muslim, is one of his main advantages. This factor, according to Ben Ephson, would make many Christians feel comfortable with Dr. Bawumia as the NPP flagbearer. Furthermore, he believes that Muslims who have traditionally voted for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would switch sides and vote for the NPP, given the perceived lack of attention the NDC pays to the Muslim community.

Ben Ephson also pointed out that the NDC’s chances of securing votes in the northern part of Ghana, which is predominantly Muslim, have been greatly diminished following the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings. Many Muslims in the north have traditionally voted for the NDC due to Rawlings’ popularity, but with his demise, the NDC’s hold on this demographic may weaken.
