The Parliamentary Committee investigating a leaked audio recording of an alleged scheme to depose the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, is due to meet again today, September 4, 2023.
The committee has already questioned the main witness, former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP Chief Bugri Naabu.
Following the presentation of Bugri Naabu, the Atta Akyea-led committee interrogated two police officials, Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi and crucial witness, Commissioner George Mensah.
Supt. George Asare, the third officer, is scheduled to appear before the committee today.
Following COP George Mensah’s statements that the IGP coordinated the recording of the leaked tape, has the original copy, and must be summoned if the committee need the tape, numerous persons have expressed differing views on the matter.
While James Agalga, a member of the committee investigating the matter, believes the committee may call the IGP to assist in the probe, former Deputy Defence Minister Major Derrick Oduro (Rtd.) believes differently.
“There is no need for the IGP to be invited because it is an accusation against him and I don’t know the terms of reference [of the Committee] and we are talking about a leaked tape, and I am not sure the terms of reference cover anything that will warrant the invitation of the IGP, and so I don’t think it is in a good direction for them to invite the IGP,” Major Derrick Oduro said.
