The recent collapse of the Bortiano Old Church building has caused shockwaves in the community, resulting in injuries to several individuals. As investigations into the cause of the collapse continue, Akwashonkye of Sakaman, Nii Omani Mensah, is calling for the arrest and prosecution of the contractor responsible for building the structure.

Nii Omani Mensah, who sold the land to the pastor, has disclosed that the contractor was instructed to ensure proper drainage of water coming from nearby hills, but failed to do so. This failure, coupled with the use of substandard materials, is believed to have contributed to the collapse of the building.

According to Nii Omani Mensah, the pastor and contractor used poor quality materials in the construction of the building. The use of substandard 32.R cement instead of the required 42.R cement, as revealed by initial investigations, is a clear example of this.

The Ghana National Fire Service has also disclosed that the pastor did not obtain the necessary permit after altering the initial plans for the church auditorium. This is a clear violation of building regulations and puts the lives of churchgoers and the community at risk.

The collapse of the Bortiano Old Church building is not an isolated incident, as many other buildings in Ghana have collapsed due to similar factors. It is therefore imperative that contractors, architects, and engineers adhere to building regulations and use quality materials in the construction of buildings.

For the most part, it is the responsibility of the government and regulatory bodies to ensure that building regulations are followed and enforced. However, individuals who sell land or commission construction projects must also take responsibility for ensuring that contractors and builders adhere to regulations and use quality materials.

In a nutshell, the collapse of the Bortiano Old Church building is a wake-up call for all stakeholders in the construction industry. It is essential that proper regulations are put in place and enforced to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The contractor responsible for the collapse must be held accountable, and individuals who commission construction projects must take responsibility for ensuring that quality materials are used and regulations are followed.
