Dr. Kwabena Donkor, the ranking member of the Parliamentary Employment Committee, has denounced the Finance Ministry personnel for applauding Minister Ken Ofori-Atta during the reading of the 2024 budget.
The Pru East MP’s remarks came in response to a widely shared video showing some Ministry of Finance employees gathered for what appeared to be a praise and worship session to greet the Finance Minister following the 2024 budget’s introduction in Parliament.
The legislator was enraged by this move and called the public officials’ behavior “unfortunate.”
In an interview with Joy FM’s Midday News, Dr. Donkor stated that it is necessary to summon the staff to order.
“I call on the Head of the Civil Service to stamp out this behaviour. The Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance must issue a stern warning to such civil servants,” he requested.
He added, “Indeed, every civil servant swears an oath and encompassed in the oath is political neutrality so when you have civil servants being reduced to cheerleaders, it is most unfortunate.”
According to Dr. Donkor, “they make it extremely impossible for any incoming government to work with them” when civil workers follow this approach.
He clarified that neutrality has been the fundamental tenet of government workers from the colonial era because of this.
“We must not countenance this. This partisanship displayed by paid civil servants goes against the state.”
