Black Stars new coach, Chris Hughton, has expressed his appreciation for being selected to manage the team despite many applicants. The former Brighton and Hove Albion manager took over from Otto Addo after the team’s World Cup exit in Qatar last year. According to the Ghana Football Association, numerous applications were received before Hughton was appointed to the position.
Speaking to Supersport, Hughton said: “If you are a player that goes into coaching and management, what you want to do is to be able to manage at the highest level. The highest levels are managing in your own country and at the international level. This particular time, the country of my father’s birth, having spent time here and having been involved, is a huge honour for me.”
Hughton has made an unbeaten start with a win and a draw against Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Ghana is currently leading Group E in the qualifiers with eight points and just a win away from securing a spot in the tournament, which will be held in Ivory Coast next year.
The Black Stars will face off against Ethiopia in their next AFCON qualifier, and Hughton will be looking to continue the team’s impressive form. The coach has expressed his desire to lead Ghana to glory and is confident that the team has what it takes to bring home the AFCON trophy.
