Ghana held its annual May 9th remembrance march in honor of the victims of the 2001 Accra Sports Stadium disaster. For the most part, families of the victims and the physically challenged community came together to remember the tragedy that claimed the lives of 127 football fans. However, this year’s memorial events also brought about a sense of hope and joy, as some children with hole-in-heart disease received support for life-changing surgeries.

The Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children’s Heart Foundation made cash donations between $6,000-$14,000 to some children in Ghana with hole-in-heart disease. The foundation, which is named after 17-year-old Shen Yang, a hole-in-heart survivor, and his brother, was founded by Shen Yan Chang, the founder and chairman of SUNDA & KEDA International Group of Companies operating in Ghana. The foundation has pledged to pay for the high cost of treating some children in Ghana with the disease for the next 10 years.

The donations made by the foundation have the potential to change the lives of many children in Ghana, who otherwise would not have access to such costly medical procedures. The gesture by the foundation goes to show the importance of reaching out to the community, especially those who are less privileged.

For the families of the victims of the May 9 stadium disaster, the remembrance march is an opportunity to reflect on the tragedy that occurred over two decades ago. It is also a time to come together as a community, to share stories and support one another in their time of grief.

The May 9th remembrance march serves as a reminder that tragedies such as the stadium disaster should not be forgotten and that we should continue to work towards preventing similar incidents from happening in the future. The importance of putting safety measures in place at public events cannot be overstated, as the consequences of not doing so can be dire.

In a nutshell, this year’s May 9th remembrance march in Ghana was a time to remember the past, but also a time to look towards the future. The generous donation made by the Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children’s Heart Foundation serves as a beacon of hope for the less privileged in society. It is a testament to the fact that small gestures can have a significant impact on people’s lives, and we should all strive to make a positive difference in our communities.
