In a startling turn of events, an automobile that had been stolen from a Canadian driveway in Toronto was found parked 8,500 kilometers away in Ghana.
David Common, a reporter for CBC News who has been looking into stolen cars from Canada, uncovered the amazing find.
The CBC reporter called Len Green, the original owner of the automobile, after discovering his phone number inside the car.
Green didn’t know the whereabouts of his car when it was stolen in 2022 until he received this surprising call from Ghana.
During the phone call, Common informed Green, “I’m calling from CBC News. We’re doing an investigation into stolen vehicles, and I’m pretty sure I’m sitting in your vehicle in West Africa.”
Green was understandably shocked to learn that his stolen car had ended up so far from its original location, exclaiming “I can’t believe it … that’s crazy.”
CBC recorded the startling revelation in a video that was uploaded to TikTok.
Journalists discovered hundreds of other automobiles in the same parking lot, some of which had Canadian license plates and frequently still had their provincial registration and insurance certificates in the glove box.
All had been claimed as stolen from Quebec and Ontario. According to a recent estimate by the Canadian Financing and Leasing Association, little over 27,000 automobiles were stolen from Ontario alone in 2021. Every 17 minutes, an automobile is stolen, on average.
