Former Minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has advised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to terminate the National Cathedral project in order to save the country money.
In his opinion, scrapping the project would imply that the government acknowledges the necessity to halt any ventures that are not possible.
In a yet-to-air interview with TV3’s Keminni Amanor, he was asked about the government’s goal of achieving single-digit inflation by the end of the year from the current 23.2%.
The Finance Ministry has estimated that the country would conclude the year with a single digit; what are your thoughts on this? Keminni asked.
In his answer, he said “If the president tells us that before he leaves office, he will never fly again in 18,000 dollar an hour plane, he hasn’t made that commitment, he should make it.
“Have you heard that the National Cathedral project has been canceled? If you hear that the National Cathedral project has been canceled then it means that the government is getting into a sensible environment and canceling projects that they know will never happen this year under this government. So cancel it openly and let us know it is canceled.”
In reference to former President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-hour economy plan, he stated that 54 percent of Ghanaians feel it is the most memorable policy slogan any political party is promoting.
He feels that if adopted, the plan will benefit the local economy significantly.
Mr Mahama suggested the ’24hr Economy’ concept when he met with leaders from the country’s major workers organization, the Trades organization Congress (TUC), on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, as part of his outreach to key stakeholders in his bid to reclaim power.
He stated that the plan was intended to create work for all Ghanaians.
“The 24-hour economy I proposed is for jobs and more jobs,” the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stressed.
Asked whether the NDC is selling this idea enough to Ghanaians Dr Spio-Grabrah, said “Over 54 per of Ghanaians believe that the 24-hour economy is the highest or the most remembered slogan or policy initiative of all the policy initiatives any political party is talking about today.”
