The opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), may lose the 2024 general election due to the choice of running mate, according to Ben Ephson, managing editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper.

According to him, it will be simpler for the ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP) to “break the 8” in the upcoming elections if Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang remains former president Mahama’s running mate.

He asserted that if John Mahama keeps Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang, he will make it simpler for the NPP to break the eight-seat barrier. Nevertheless, if John Mahama wants the campaign to be competitive, he should choose a member of the Volta Region as his running mate.

Mr. Ephson went on to say that in order for either of the two parties to win an election, they must triumph in their respective strongholds, and the Volta Region is the NDC’s stronghold. Yet, the region’s support for the party has declined in terms of voting percentage.

“These two big parties must do well in their strongholds before they can win any election, yet for the previous three elections, NDC their vote in the Volta Region has decreased by 6%,” he said.

As a result, he has urged the NDC leadership to think about selecting a member of the Volta Region to run as John Mahama’s running mate.

He thinks that the NDC will become competitive in the general election of 2024 as a result.

This was said by Mr. Ephson while speaking on Onua TV in Accra on April 7, 2023.
