Al Jazeera’s recent investigative documentary on Canadian gold smuggler and money launderer, Alistair Mathias, has sparked controversy in Ghana. The final episode of the documentary, which focused on Mathias’ activities across Africa, claimed that he had relationships with various African presidents, including Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo. According to Mathias, Akufo-Addo was a good friend and his lawyer.

The allegations have drawn reactions from some members of the opposition, including Malik Basintale of the National Democratic Congress, who has called for a six-month investigation into the president’s involvement with Mathias. Kwame Jantuah, a legal practitioner, has suggested that Akufo-Addo sue Mathias and Al Jazeera at the International Court of Justice.

The presidency has responded to the documentary by demanding an apology and retraction from Al Jazeera. In turn, the news organization has clarified various points and corrected some parts of its content.

President Akufo-Addo’s lawyer has denied any association with Mathias or his company, Guldrest. He stated that the president has not been in private practice as a lawyer since 2000 and has had no dealings with Mathias or his associates.

For the most part, the allegations made by Al Jazeera and Mathias have sparked a debate about the president’s integrity and his ties to the gold smuggling and money laundering industry. While the president’s lawyer has denied the allegations, some members of the opposition are calling for a thorough investigation. It remains to be seen how this controversy will play out in Ghana’s political landscape.
