The leaked audio of a police commissioner and a senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) discussing a scheme to oust Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akufo Dampare from his position has led to Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, national chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to call for investigations into the incident.
He claims that people who are advocating for the aforementioned tape to be disregarded on the grounds that it cannot affect the outcome of an election are illiterate and in need of education since security has a big effect on how elections turn out.
People assert that the recording has been altered due to current technology, while the government asserts that it has no plans to fire the IGP or rig the election.Security, however, is crucial, thus they ought to look into the tape.
He said, “Anyone who claims that security cannot influence election outcomes lacks understanding of elections and should go to school to learn more, as a successful election revolves on a free and fair election.”
The NDC National Chairman also stated in an interview with Okay FM on July 13, 2023 that the freedom of voters is a crucial component of a fair election, necessitating the inclusion of sufficient security measures.
The recording includes a policeman who calls himself “Mensah” and a politician who was allegedly a former regional leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). They talk about their desire to remove the IGP because they believe that doing so will prevent any potential manipulation of the 2024 elections by being too rigid. As an example of the IGP’s dedication to ensure free and fair elections, the Commissioner particularly cites the IGP’s conduct of the Assin North by-election.
