Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the national chairman of the NDC, was informed by Stephen Ntim, the national chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), that the Ivory Coast’s economy is undoubtedly not doing as well as the latter claimed.

A fortnight ago, Mr. Asiedu Nketia praised and held the Ivory Coast up as an example of what Ghana should strive to be like in his speech on what the NDC party called the Real Condition of the Nation.

At a news conference, Chairman Ntim responded to the NDC’s statement by accusing it of purposefully distorting the economic situation in Ivory Coast by implying all is fine with Ghana’s western neighbour.

In reality, the Ivory Coast they were promoting at the time was in talks with the IMF to secure a blended Extended Credit Facility worth $2.6 billion. “The Ivorian authorities and IMF staff have reached a broad consensus on the authorities’ economic reform programme that an IMF financial arrangement might support,” the IMF stated in a release following the conclusion of its staff’s mission to Ivory Coast on March 15, 2023.

Chairman Ntim said, “Under the 2021–25 National Development Plan, the authorities are moving forward with their objective for a more profound economic reform. While the economy has been severely impacted by the triple shock of the Covid-19 outbreak, global financial tightening, and unfavourable fallout from Russia’s War in Ukraine, they have taken steps to enhance macroeconomic stability and reverse expanding fiscal and external imbalances.

“It proved out that the NDC is a party of incompetent researchers as well as incompetent managers of Ghana’s economy. Just five days before their press conference, they should have been aware of the Ivory Coast-IMF deal.
