The Akosombo Dam is now getting nearly 200 percent more water at this time of year in October than it did in prior years, according to the Volta River Authority (VRA).
The Akosombo Dam will continue to leak water because the volume of water entering the dam “is so great.”
“If we have two days of continuous rainfall, the dam could break”, Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, Deputy Chief Executive of the VRA in charge of Engineering and Operations said on Accra-based Citi FM on Monday morning.
He clarified that the last two years that this phenomena of water influx to Akosombo Dam occurred was in 2006 and 2010.
Apart from the volumes of water coming from Burkina Faso, there is also some coming in from Togo.
Mr. Obeng-Kenzo said the trend was following the 2010 trend.
He said the VRA was currently tracking the water inflow and that if there was any unexpected volumes of flow, the spillage will continue.
