AFCON 2023: “I take responsibility” – Chris Hughton stops short of resigning after embarrassing Mozambique draw

Chris Hughton, the Black Stars’ head coach, has taken responsibility for Ghana’s last-minute collapse against Mozambique, which has resulted in another group stage loss at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Stars squandered a two-goal advantage in six minutes to draw 2-2 with Mozambique in their last Group B encounter on Monday night at the Olympic Stadium in Abidjan.

The result has put the stars in third place in the group, with only two points, and they now need a miracle to qualify as one of the four third-place teams.

Speaking at the post game press conference, Hughton said,”I take responsibility for this performance and admit my results with the Black Stars have not been good enough.”

But he didn’t resign from his post.

Perhaps he didn’t retire right away because the Black Stars had a slight chance of progressing to the next round if other outcomes go their way.

Ghana is now positioned fifth among the third-place teams and can only qualify if Zambia, Algeria, and Cameroon all lose their final group games.

Cameroon faces Gambia, Algeria faces Mauritania, and Zambia faces the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
