At the approaching Keta NDC primary, Dr. Senanu Djokoto, a candidate for parliament, has petitioned the appeals committee regarding the approval of Dr. Emmanuel Jones Mensah, another candidate, to run.
The vetting committee’s determination that Dr. Jones Mensah had satisfied the prerequisites of Regulation 2.1(III) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Guidelines for clearing parliamentary candidates for the 2024 general election, according to Dr. Djokoto, was mistaken.
According to the rules, anyone interested in running for a seat in parliament “must be an active member of the party in the constituency for not less than four years… pending the date of filing their nominations.”
In his petition, Dr. Djokoto expressed his dissatisfaction with the committee’s decision to accept a letter from Dr. Mensah distancing himself from fraudulent registration practises at Ashiaman, which was obtained by the Ghana News Agency.
He said, “I also find the vetting committee’s examination into the aspirant’s purported Ashaiman membership inconclusive, since the committee took no effort to authenticate the said purported membership.
Dr. Djokoto stated that he had faithfully served the NDC in the Keta Constituency and was aware that the majority of members and executives appreciated honesty, truth, and integrity; therefore, the situation required a just and fair conclusion.
Any decision made regarding Dr. Jones Mensah’s legibility or in any other way “may negatively influence me as a candidate in the election,” he claimed.
“Under the circumstances, I think it will be wise for the appeals committee to put this issue to rest to avoid any potential legal tussle from same,” the author writes.
