Abena Osei-Poku appointed Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana


Mrs. Abena Osei-Poku was named this week as the substantive Managing Director and Regional Executive for the Ecobank Group’s Anglophone West Africa (AWA) Region, beginning January 1, 2024.

She succeeds Ms. Joana Mensah, who was appointed Acting Managing Director on August 15, 2023, following the retirement of the former Managing Director, Mr Dan Sackey.


Mrs. Abena Osei-Poku is a successful Pan-African business leader with over 25 years in the financial services industry. Her regional experience includes Corporate and Investment banking, Business banking, and Risk Management.

She began her work at First Atlantic Merchant Bank as a private banker. She eventually worked as an Assistant Relationship Manager at Standard Chartered Bank Ghana before becoming the Credit Manager for Multinational Corporates.

From 2001 to 2002, she was the Head of the Group Special Assets Risk Management (SARM) department in Ghana, and she later assumed supervision responsibility for the West and Central African regions.

She was appointed Director of Global Corporates at Wholesale Bank in 2005. She was appointed by Barclays Bank Ghana as the Executive Director for Commercial Banking, responsible for Corporate & Business Banking, after working for Standard Chartered Bank Ghana for ten years.

Mrs. Abena Osei-Poku joined Absa Bank Group (previously Barclays Bank) in 2016 as the Co-Regional Head of Coverage, Corporate & Investment Banking for East and West Africa. She was then named CEO and Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana, where she remained until her current hiring by Ecobank.

She has extensive board expertise, having previously served on boards in the telecommunications, finance, commerce, and hotel industries. She is now the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana, as well as the departing Chairperson of the Ghana Stock Exchange Council.

She is also an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Ghana, and she serves on other executive fora.

Mrs. Abena Osei-Poku possesses an MBA from Manchester Business School in the United Kingdom, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Statistics from the University of Ghana.
