A/R: Police Officers Interdicted and Suspects Arrested Following Attack on Policeman in Kumawu

Two police officers have been interdicted for allegedly failing to rescue their colleague who was attacked by some youth in Kumawu last Friday.

Corporal Sylvester Berhene was on duty with Constable Isaac Boiatey and Constable Evans Owusu at the Won Akotosu snap checkpoint when he came under attack. The two policemen on duty with him have been interdicted for not rescuing their colleague and subduing the attackers.

They have been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for an investigation into their professional conduct. A sixth suspect has been arrested, while the seventh is still on the run.

On Good Friday, April 7, 2023, at about 4:45 pm, three police officers, including Corporal Sylvester Berhene, were on duty at the Won Akotosu snap checkpoint near Kumawu in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, Edward Boateng, Evans Addo, Yaw Kusi, Michael Owusu, Yaw Boateng, and Emmanuel Mensah, were pulled up in an overloaded taxi cab at the checkpoint. The police officer stopped them and requested to search the car. The suspects violently attacked the officer, preventing him from checking the car.

The suspects were reportedly returning from a hunt and had a rat carcass in the boot of the taxi. They resisted the attempt by the police corporal to take away their meat, resulting in the confrontation.

The policeman allegedly fired a warning shot, which resulted in the youth pouncing on him. The police reinforcement team managed to arrest six of the suspects, while the seventh is still on the run.

During the attack, Corporal Berhene sustained a knee injury, and one of the suspects also sustained some injuries. They were both sent to the hospital for medical attention.

A video depicting portions of the incident has been shared on social media. According to the police account, while Corporal Sylvester Berhene was conducting the search in the boot of the vehicle, some of the occupants became angry and pounced on him.

The police surveillance team was contacted for reinforcement, and when they arrived, the police managed to arrest three of the assailants: Edward Boateng, Evans Addo, and Yaw Kusi. The others managed to escape, but two of them were later arrested. The interdicted police officers are under investigation by the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for their professional conduct.
