The public is being asked by attorney Ernestina Obboh Botchwey to try to use extreme caution when making purchases. She has warned that making the incorrect choice, such as acquiring stolen goods from unapproved or unregistered merchants, can result in a jail sentence of up to fifteen years.
Ms Botchwey, who previously explained on her YouTube channel that Ghana’s laws provide that a person who dishonestly receives the results of crime, such as stolen goods or stolen property, shall be punished in the same manner as the persons who committed the actual crime of stolen goods or stolen property, is an Assistant Public Defender at the Legal Aid Commission, after the Courts have considered all the evidence and properly convicted the buyer or receiver of the proceeds of the robbery with an offensive weapon of the crime of dishonestly receiving, they will also impose the same minimum punishment on that person. The purpose of this is to show that a minimum penalty of 15 years in prison is imposed for robbery with a dangerous weapon.
She mentioned that she knows someone who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for purchasing a phone from the improper source, supporting her claim in point l.
“I am aware of a person who was sentenced to 15 years in jail for making an incorrect phone purchase. Please use caution when trading, she said.
