A 60-year-old security man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for defiling a six-year-old girl. Osman Monnie, who was charged with defilement, pleaded guilty before the Accra Circuit Court presided over by Mrs Christina Cann.

The prosecution, led by Superintendent of Police Agnes Boafo, requested the maximum sentence, stating that the victim could be the accused person’s granddaughter. Despite the screaming and weeping of the victim, Monnie proceeded to defile her, prompting the prosecutor to ask for a severe and deterrent sentence.

The convict, who is married with three children, did not give any reason for his actions. The court heard that Monnie lived in Kasoa with his family but worked as a security guard at the Industrial Area in Kaneshie, Accra.

For the most part, Monnie was too close to where the complainant resided, and he used to play with the victim for about a year before the incident occurred. On March 17, 2023, Monnie had sexual intercourse with the victim, and someone recorded the act.

Three days later, the complainant saw the video, which showed Monnie having sex with the victim. After interviewing the victim, the complainant reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service at Kaneshie.

The police issued a medical report form to the complainant to seek medical care for the victim, which confirmed that the victim had been defiled. Monnie was subsequently arrested by the Police.

This case highlights the need for heightened awareness of sexual abuse and the importance of reporting such cases to the appropriate authorities. It also reinforces the need for adequate protection for vulnerable children in society. It is vital to ensure that perpetrators of such heinous crimes face the full force of the law to deter others from engaging in such acts.

In conclusion, the Ghanaian legal system has demonstrated its commitment to protecting vulnerable children by handing down severe punishments to perpetrators of such crimes. It is incumbent on all citizens to be vigilant and report any cases of sexual abuse to the relevant authorities to safeguard the welfare of children in our society.
