“2024: We’ll Go To EC Strongroom With Our Own Tea And Biscuit – Mahama”

Former President John Dramani Mahama has promised that representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the National Collation Center, popularly known as the “strongroom,” will go in with their own tea and biscuits in the upcoming 2024 general election. This is in response to allegations that representatives of the NDC during the 2020 election did not strictly observe the collation process, leading to their inability to dispute the results.

Addressing NDC delegates at Ashaley Botwe in the Greater Accra Region, Mahama stated that his party would be extra vigilant during the 2024 election to ensure that they match their opponents at the polling stations and in the strongroom. He expressed his belief that packing the Electoral Commission with activists of the ruling New Patriotic Party would not deter the NDC’s resolve to police the election results.

Mahama charged branch and constituency executives of the NDC to get actively involved in the electoral processes in their respective polling stations to ensure free, fair and transparent elections. He added that vigilance at the polling stations would be in their custody, and they must make sure that the election in their polling station is transparent.

“It is a new system, and we will come and explain it to you. Elections are won or lost at the polling stations, and in all your branches, you have polling stations. Vigilance at the polling stations is going to be in your custody. Campaigning in the polling station is going to be in your care, and so we are going to rely on you to make sure that the election in your polling station is going to be free, fair and transparent.”

Mahama’s promise to ensure fair and transparent elections comes after allegations of election fraud during the 2020 elections, which were contested in court by the NDC but ultimately dismissed by the Supreme Court. It remains to be seen whether his efforts will lead to a different outcome in the 2024 elections.
