In a hamlet called Abrokofe in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region, security guards of several Chinese illegal miners shot and killed an 18-year-old teenager and wounded two others.
The shooting event took place on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, when the victims, who were locals, arrived at the mining site to begin their shifts.
Kofi King Arthur was shot in the chest and passed away instantly. Albert Oppong and Joseph Tawiah, the two injured parties, were shot in the lower back and thigh, respectively.
They are being treated at Sefwi Asafo’s St. John of God Hospital.
On other days, according to the locals, they are not permitted access to the mining site, but on “Breaking Days,” when the Chinese miners are off duty, they are permitted to go gold mining.
But on Wednesday, the site’s security guards opened fire on them, killing one and wounding two more.
According to Citi News, galamsey operations are reportedly particularly prevalent in the Juaboso District in the Western North Region, with the exception of the Aowin Municipality and the Suaman District, which are especially notable illicit mining sites.
Their actions have damaged potential cocoa crops and other agricultural farmlands in Bonsu Nkwanta, Mintakrom, Yawgyem, Sefwi Juaboso, Boinzan and Abrokofe, Agyemangdiem, Mafia, and Sefwi Elluibo, where illegal mining was taking place within people’s beds.
The victims were originally brought to Kofikrom-Proso Clinic and then moved to Asafo for treatment, according to Barnabas Nketiah, the unit committee chairman of Abrokofe and the father of one of the victims, in an interview with Citi News.
